What is the function of Natural Surface Reaming shell

2026-01-05

Natural Surface Reaming shell is a key tool used in conjunction with coring bits in geological core drilling. Utilizing natural diamond as the cutting/grinding medium, its core functions focus on reaming and sizing, drilling stability, hole protection and sample preservation, and enhancing drilling efficiency. It directly ensures the quality of the drill hole and the integrity of the core sample, as detailed below:
1.Precise hole expansion and sizing, tailored to meet coring requirements
When the drill bit is drilling, it is prone to cause hole diameter deviations due to uneven strata. The drill shell, through the cutting/grinding action of natural diamond blades, expands the borehole to the design diameter and maintains consistent hole diameter, providing sufficient clearance for the core barrel, avoiding drill jamming and burying, while ensuring stable operation after subsequent replacement of the drill bit, and guaranteeing the dimensional accuracy of drilling.
2.Stabilize the drilling tool and suppress deflection vibration
As a rigid support and guiding component of the drill string assembly, the drill casing can offset lateral vibration and bit deflection during drilling. Especially in fractured and loose formations, it can significantly enhance the stability of the drill string, reduce borehole bending, ensure that the borehole trajectory meets design requirements, and improve core recovery.
3.Protect the hole wall and core to ensure sample quality
During the reaming process, the natural diamond blade can trim the hole wall, reducing the risk of chipping and collapse; at the same time, it avoids direct friction between the core barrel and the hole wall during coring, preventing core wear and contamination, ensuring the integrity and representativeness of the core sample, and meeting the needs of geological analysis.
4.Optimize drilling efficiency and extend tool life
Natural diamond boasts high hardness and strong wear resistance, making it ideal for drilling through hard and abrasive formations. It can efficiently break down the rock surrounding the borehole, reducing the resistance to hole enlargement. The stable condition of the drilling tools minimizes abnormal wear between the drill bit and drill rod, thereby extending the lifespan of the entire drilling set and reducing construction costs.
5.Adapt to complex strata and enhance construction safety
It is suitable for various strata ranging from fragmented and loose to hard and dense. Through the multi-pad design (double pads/triple pads), it enhances the fit with the borehole wall. In strata prone to collapse and water inrush, it can assist in maintaining the stability of the borehole wall, reducing the incidence of accidents within the borehole, and ensuring the continuous and safe operation of drilling.
